Can CGI and smart product design help end the plastic waste crisis?

A lot of plastic waste is produced during the prototyping process. There are several different ways of prototyping products, but one popular method is 3D printing.

3D printing and plastic waste

3D printing can be an excellent tool for testing new initiatives and discovering how your final design might work. However, 3D printing can also produce a lot of wastage. According to Filamentive, unwanted prototypes cause over 25% of wastage.

Don’t get me wrong. Prototyping has its part to play in the product development process, and there will always be a degree of wastage, but 25% is staggering.

Smart design method

Here at R3NDER we focus on physical prototyping at the end of the development journey to try and combat wastage. Instead of physically prototyping new concepts right away, we use virtual modelling to refine your design and de-risk the process. This method reduces the need for repetitive prototyping and consequently, diminishes plastic waste, as well as other materials.

In a world where we are all far more conscious about the waste we are producing, and with eight million tons a year of new plastic being ploughed into our oceans, we think it is about time we did something about it.
